Call for Applications: Metagenomic Virus Discovery Workshop

The Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) invites applications for a five-day intensive Training in Metagenomic Virus Discovery. This hands-on workshop will be led by global experts, offering participants practical skills and strategies in virus discovery—from project design to advanced analysis.
About the Training
The programme combines core lectures in metagenomics and phylogenetics with hands-on sessions focused on:
- Project planning and experimental design
- Building metagenomic analysis pipelines
- Downstream analysis (e.g. phylogenetics, structural analysis)
- Interpreting and presenting results (e.g. virus evolution, genomic epidemiology)
Who Should Apply
This training is designed for individuals with some experience in bioinformatics and the command line, and basic knowledge of virology. It is suitable for:
- Postgraduate students
- Postdoctoral researchers and fellows
- Scientists and senior scientists
While not tailored to a specific virus application, the training includes examples from animal-infecting viruses, using a mammalian dataset for tutorials.
Funding and Support
Supported by the Rockerfeller, full funding is available for selected researchers residing in Africa.
This includes:
- Airfare and local ground transport
- Accommodation
- Registration
Registration Fee
R13 000 (covers training meals and two networking events)
