Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Epidemiology, Genomics & Phylogenetics

We invite applications from ambitious post doctoral scientists, to undertake research in a Flagship research programme on epidemics in Africa. The fellow will develop and apply molecular epidemiology, phylodynamics and phylogeography techniques to describe pathogens of epidemiological concern to Africa.

Fellowship promoters will be appointed at the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Postdoctoral Fellows will be awarded a well-paid tax-free fellowship in South African currency for up to 3 years. Once appointed, the successful candidates will be expected to apply for externally funded personal fellowships to be hosted by Stellenbosch University or one of CERI’s main international partners in the USA (University of Washington), U.K. (University of Oxford and Lincoln University), Germany (Heidelberger Institut für Global Health) or Brazil (FioCruz Foundation). The positions are based at superb facilities in Durban at KRISP/UKZN, Cape Town and Stellenbosch, although flexibility exists for time in South Africa and abroad.

Interested candidates holding a PhD, and with clear evidence of internationally competitive research are invited to send their CV's and discuss their interest (which is not restricted to the abovementioned fellowship topic) informally with Prof. Tulio de Oliveira, Prof. Frank Tanser and Dr. Houriiyah Tegally in the first instance, prior to formal application. Please email Dr. Cheryl Baxter (CERI’s head of scientific support) at email: baxterc@sun.ac.za for further information.

In total, we are advertising up to Seven Post-Doctoral Fellowships. Potential areas of study include population, biological and ecological aspects of pathogens in the context of the South African, African and Global epidemics. Start date is open to suit candidate needs, deadline for applications: 31 January 2023.
