Stellenbosch University's Research & Innovation Excellence Awards held on October 30, 2023, was a night to remember as the institution celebrated the exceptional contributions of its researchers and innovators. The awards evening, which took place at Stellenbosch University's campus(STIAS), brought together a diverse group of individuals dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and making a lasting impact on society.
The Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University, Professor Wim de Villiers, set the tone for the evening with his inspiring words, stating, "We have a reason to celebrate you, that's why you are here. Because research and innovation are key components of what we do at SU. They are part of our DNA". These words emphasize the critical role that research and innovation play in shaping the university's mission and the future at large.
The Center for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) secured two awards. With the Director, Professor Tulio de Oliveira, receiving the Rector and Vice-Chancellor's Research for Impact Award. This accolade recognizes Professor de Oliveira's exceptional research contributions over the past three years, emphasizing the far-reaching impact on the economy, society, public policy, health, environment, and quality of life, transcending the confines of academia. Professor de Oliveira's tireless dedication has left an indelible mark on these critical aspects of society.
CERI's accolades didn't stop there. The center also claimed the DVC Team Award for exceptional research, solidifying its reputation as a hub for groundbreaking interdisciplinary research. The DVC: Interdisciplinary/Group Award celebrates outstanding research performance at a high international level by a research group within Stellenbosch University.
After accepting the award, Prof. de Oliveira humbly expressed, "It is not about me, but the team and everyone who made it possible to have a center that does interdisciplinary research", underscoring the vital role of teamwork and the unwavering dedication of the entire CERI team in pioneering groundbreaking interdisciplinary research, which has had a profound impact on epidemic response in Africa and beyond.
